Do88 Performance Intercooler, designed for easy installation and a perfect fit in your BMW M2C / M3 / M4 F8X.
The S55 turbocharged engine powering the BMW M2C/M3/M4 F8X uses a top-mounted, water-cooled intercooler instead of a conventional air-cooled one . This OE intercooler has a tube-and-fin core with clamped plastic end tanks. This design has its drawbacks, as it is prone to cracking and can leak coolant into the engine or lose boost pressure from the tank seals.
Our mission in developing this new performance intercooler was to eliminate the weaknesses of the OE intercooler and, of course, to deliver a significant performance increase. In all the tests we conducted during the development of our entire BMW F8X M2C/M3/M4 product range, we clearly see how peak power is directly related to IAT (Intake Air Temperature) .
To obtain an accurate 3D model of the available space for designing our intercooler, we performed a detailed 3D scan of our M3 Competition engine bay. We then tested several design concepts for our intercooler using our Solidworks CAD software.
The final design result is a bar-and-plate core with TIG-welded cast aluminum tanks , offering a significantly larger core compared to the standard design. This allowed for an 85% increase in core volume and reduced the pressure drop across the intercooler by approximately 16% , while maintaining a plug-and-play fit without modifications.
The reduced pressure drop across the intercooler offers several advantages, such as reduced turbocharger workload to reach target boost pressures, lower temperatures, and improved throttle response . On the coolant side, the design has been modified for dual-pass flow , allowing the coolant to pass through the intercooler core twice before exiting.
In addition , high-density cooling fins are used on both the air and water sides to maximize heat exchange and significantly increase the active cooling surface area compared to the OE part.
According to the manufacturer, all these improvements result in a real increase in performance for both standard and heavily modified vehicles , whether on the road, race track or when accelerating on the drag strip.
