The S55 turbo engine that powers the BMW M2C/M3/M4 F8X features two air filter boxes that supply the turbos with fresh air. The standard air filter boxes are equipped with relatively small flat filters, thus restricting airflow.
The goal in developing this intake system was to ensure it operates in a closed loop, preventing the intake of hot air from the engine compartment – a common problem with many aftermarket systems. Hot air in the intake area leads to higher intake air temperatures (IAT) and can negatively impact performance.
For the upgrade system, the engine bay of an M3 Competition was 3D-scanned to create an accurate model for the design. This enabled the development of a system that utilizes large BMC dual-cone air filters with a high filter surface area (for high airflow, even after extended use). The pipes are 76 mm (3") in diameter and designed with as few and as smooth bends as possible to reduce airflow resistance.
To completely prevent hot air from entering, heat shields and covers with rubber seals are installed so that the system draws in cool outside air. The original air ducts are used because they had no limiting effect in the test.
The intake pipes are made of seamless aluminum tubing with a 76 mm diameter; the pipes and heat shields are powder-coated with a durable, matte textured finish. The air filter covers are made of lightweight polycarbonate with a satin black surface.
